Alwyn Vintcent and the SA Maritime Museum

I used to be the Manager of the SA Maritime Museum in Cape Town. It was during my time that the Alwyn Vintcent (AV) was acquired by the museum as a floating exhibit. Recently, I discovered the AV was de-accessioned and sold by IZIKO (the current mega-museum which incorporates the former SA Cultural History Museum of which the SA Maritime Museum was a satellite).

I was also excited to hear that the AV would most likely be coming to Australia rather than be sold for scrap or scuttled. As I now live in Australia (notched up my tenth anniversary this week) it would be quite surreal if this did happen and I could reacquaint myself with the tug on new shores.

Earlier today I spoke with Gordon, the new owner, to get an update of when the vessel would leave Cape Town. I also indicated to Gordon I'd dig in some old files and revive my memories of the tug and post them on this wiki for general information and discussion. I plan to do that in the next couple of weeks so keep a look out in the Memories of the Alwyn Vintcent column.

Cheers

Thomas
