I have recently been over in S.A working and happened upon the Alwyn Vintcent. She is in a disgusting state again and I was told the Aussie who bought her for about $250.00AU has not paid people for works carried out and has not been heard of.
I have heard a whisper he has been looking at a old ferry in Australia. I hope he does not do the same thing in his own country to a group of dedicated volunteers.

Hi. I've just joined, and was very curious to know a couple of things. How will the Vintcent get to Australia? What will she be used for once she gets there? What city is she going to?

Has anyone heard anything about Gordon Bashford or the Alwyn Vintcent?
I thought he was responsible for buying the Falls of Clyde but I have since learned this was just a story.

New story on site.
Thanks to Martin, with the encouragement of Dylan, for posting his story about the three tugs ambitious trip to sail to Australia in 1983. A great contribution.
Cheers

A new story, submitted by Anton in Cape Town, has been added to the Memories of the Alwyn Vintcent section. It provides mechanical details of the conversion of the AV to hydraulics and diesel power in 1996 and current considerations for reversing the process of 12 years ago.

The 'Memories of the Alwyn Vintcent' section of this Wiki offers the opportunity for people to contribute their thoughts, views, opinions or record their association with the AV.
It would be great if there would be more contributors to this column. let's hear your stories. How about it guys?
I'm particularly interested in what happenned to the AV after mid -995 until she was bought by private ownership in 2008.
Cheers

I used to be the Manager of the SA Maritime Museum in Cape Town. It was during my time that the Alwyn Vintcent (AV) was acquired by the museum as a floating exhibit. Recently, I discovered the AV was de-accessioned and sold by IZIKO (the current mega-museum which incorporates the former SA Cultural History Museum of which the SA Maritime Museum was a satellite).
I was also excited to hear that the AV would most likely be coming to Australia rather than be sold for scrap or scuttled. As I now live in Australia (notched up my tenth anniversary this week) it would be quite surreal if this did happen and I could reacquaint myself with the tug on new shores.
Earlier today I spoke with Gordon, the new owner, to get an update of when the vessel would leave Cape Town. I also indicated to Gordon I'd dig in some old files and revive my memories of the tug and post them on this wiki for general information and discussion. I plan to do that in the next couple of weeks so keep a look out in the Memories of the Alwyn Vintcent column.
Cheers
